BARGAINING

*Birch Run EA Proposals have been exchanged
*Bridgeport EA Transferring to 11A Coordinating Council
*Freeland ESP Bargaining is in progress
*Saginaw ISD-ESP By one vote this unit has chosen the Steelworkers union as its bargaining agent. Effective June 30th MEA will no longer represent this group.
*Saginaw Twp EA The issues are on the table and bargaining is scheduled for May 10, 16, 18, and June 16, 17
*Reese EA has indicated a desire to join the 11-B Coordinating Council

GRIEVANCES

Saginaw Twp EA – The district is balking at implementing the arbitrators award for 7 of the 10 teachers who were improperly placed on the pay scale. If necessary we will use the court system to enforce the arbitrators award.

Linda McLeod’s grievance asking for compensation for peer counseling is scheduled Sept 19.

The STEA grievance seeking compensation for teachers required to provide instruction to a suspended student is waiting for a hearing date to be scheduled.

Saginaw ISD – In the termination cases of Beth Felton & Sonya De Graffenreid the State Labor Mediator recommended that they both be returned to work. The District has declined to do so and their cases have been submitted to arbitration. The District has rejected the initial list of arbitrators and AAA will appoint one from the second list.

The Millet Center grievance asking for compensation for lost wages on a parent/teacher conference day is scheduled for hearing before the Michigan Employment Relations Commission on May 12.

Need to increase budget for OPIE
Reese reimburse for dues paid – not members until next year

C. President – Need update of Constitution and Bylaws
D. MEA Board – No Report
E. MESSA Senate Bills – Info on 55/56 sent
F. Locals Carrollton – No report.
Bridgeport – 12 – 13 pink slips given out. Transferring to 11-A
Swan Valley EA – 1 year left on contract.
Birch Run – Layoffs and shifting of employees.
Sag Twp – Negotiating contract.
Swan Valley ESP – 6 pink slips Title I or SPE Parapro.
G. MEA Retired – Requested list of new retirees.
H. Uniserv Director – Mea.org has tools to combat Senate Bills 55/56.
Bad news – Saginaw ISD ESP disaffiliated with MEA
and chose to join Steelworkers union by one vote.
I. Guest – Julie Cohen – VISTA volunteer – At Risk Youth after school program
presentation.
V. SCPAC
A. State Legislative Update – No action being taken presently for SB 55/56.
B. Legislative Councils – Asking each member to contact their legislator 3 times this year by any method of choice.
C. Stop the Takeover Plan – Please come to June 21 Rally in Lansing – Starts at 1:00 – “Stop the Takeover Plan”
